In a thrilling World Cup final that ended 3-3 after extra time in Qatar on Sunday, Lionel Messi finally took home the trophy as Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties. Here are some highlights from the match at Lusail Stadium:

Argentina takes a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute thanks to a Messi penalty. Angel Di Maria receives a wide pass from Julian Alvarez, skips Ousmane Dembele, and is tripped up inside the box by the France winger who is turning around. Hugo Lloris is forced to run the other way, earning Argentina their fifth penalty kick of the competition, which Lionel Messi converts.

Argentina makes it 2-0 in the 36th minute after tearing France apart with a spectacular counterattack that Angel Di Maria finished off. Messi receives a first-time pass from Alexis Mac Allister, who then flicks it out wide to Alvarez. Alvarez plays through Mac Alister as he keeps running, setting up Di Maria to slam past Lloris.

41st minute: France coach Didier Deschamps chooses to make two substitutions just before halftime since he knows his team is losing the match. Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani are drafted in place of Olivier Giroud and Dembele.

Kylian Mbappe scores from the penalty spot in the 80th minute to bring France within 2-1. The Argentina center-back fouled Kolo Muani from behind when he slipped behind Nicolas Otamendi. Emiliano Martinez gets a touch on Mbappe’s low shot to his right, but he is unable to stop France’s first goal-bound attempt.

Mbappe scores twice in as many minutes in the 81st minute to tie the score for France. Messi is taken away by Kingsley Coman, who then locates Adrien Rabiot. He glides the ball in the direction of Mbappe, who nods to Thuram before volleying the return pass low into the corner.

Messi is rejected in the 90th minute. In the waning seconds of regulation, the Argentina star has one more opportunity to win the match, but a flying Lloris tips over his thunderous 20-meter shot.

Messi gives Argentina the lead again, 3-2, in the 109th minute. Gonzalo Montiel’s hack upfield is backheeled to Messi by Lautaro Martinez. In order to set up Martinez, he passes to Enzo Fernandez. Martinez’s shot is expertly blocked by Lloris, but Messi is there to snag the rebound from close range.

As France ties the score at 3-3 in the 118th minute, Mbappe scores another penalty kick to complete his hat trick. Montiel blocks Mbappe’s shot, and the striker follows the same path as with his previous penalty by burying it into the corner.

Kolo Muani has an opportunity to win the World Cup for France in the 120th minute after latching onto a long pass over the top, but heroically, Martinez sticks out his left leg to force penalties.

In the shootout, Martinez dives to his right to block Coman’s second shot from France. France’s third attempt is dragged wide by Aurelien Tchouameni. Argentina scores all four of their penalties, and Montiel converts the go-ahead kick.
