The senior diplomat at the Japanese embassy in Seoul described efforts to improve relations between South Korea and Japan as “masturbating”. The offending comment made changes in plans of South Korean President’s visit to Tokyo.

South Korean President Moon Jae -in will not visit Tokyo for the upcoming Olympics, his office said on Monday. The president is  abandoning plans for his first summit with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. This came up after the senior diplomat at the Japanese embassy in Seoul described efforts to improve relations between the countries as “masturbating”.

Later, press secretary Park Soohyun said ‘President Moon would not visit Japan’. At a briefing where the two countries tried to address disputes over history. The talks have been amicable and have made considerable progress, but it has not yet been taken into account as a result of the summit and we have taken other circumstances into account,” said Park, without going into detail.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga did not comment, but later pointed that the diplomats comment was “unacceptable”. Moon instead will send the culture minister to head the Korean delegation to the opening ceremony on Friday, his office said. ‘Wishing Japan a safe and successful Olympic Games.’

A fresh controversy aroused for bilateral and regional cooperation: Neighbors have long disagreed over compensation for Koreans who had to work in Japanese companies and military brothels during the Japanese colonial rule of 1910 on a number of islands controlled by Korea as Japanese territory.
