Lt. General Anil Chauhan, a retired general, was named the next Chief of Defence Staff by the Center on Wednesday (CDS). The retired Lt. General will serve as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs, according to a statement from the ministry of defence.

According to a release from the defence ministry, “Govt of India selects Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who would also serve as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs. In a career spanning over nearly 40 years, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan had held several command, staff and instrumental appointments and had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and the northeast, the statement read.

Lt Gen Anil Chauhan, who was born on May 18th, 1961, joined the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. a graduate of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun as well as the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla. He was a Major General who oversaw an Infantry Division in the Northern Command’s Baramula area.

After leading a corps in the northeast, he later rose to the position of general officer commanding-in-chief of the Eastern Command, a position he held from September 2019 until his retirement from the military on May 31, 2021.

The officer also tenanted important staff appointments, including the charge of Director General of Military Operations. The officer had also served as a United Nations mission to Angola.

On May 31, 2021, the officer retired from the Indian Army. He kept making contributions to strategic and national security issues even after leaving the Army. Lt. General Anil Chauhan (Retired) received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for his honourable and outstanding service in the Army.
